Leave Tashilog Garage early and cruise the Kan-etsu Expressway into the mountain villages of Echigo. Rather than turning toward Okutadami, you follow valleys carved by tributaries of the Shinano River toward Matsunoyama Onsen, tucked in the mountains on the Niigata–Nagano border.

Highlights

  • One of Japan's three great medicinal springs: ranked alongside Arima and Kusatsu, with a dense "fossil seawater" source said to be about 12 million years old.
  • Golden hills and rice terraces: the century-old beech grove of Bijinbayashi and the iconic Hoshitoge terraced rice fields.
  • Satoyama winding roads: easy, scenic curves along Route 353 through autumn foliage.

How the trip flows

Day 1 is mostly the ride and a relaxed soak at Hinano-yado Chitose. Day 2 tours Bijinbayashi and Hoshitoge before the ride home. Autumn, when the hills turn gold, is the finest season.
