Oga Peninsula Namahage Coast Ride
A two-day expedition from Hachioji via the Tohoku and Akita Expressways to the Oga Peninsula, tracing the land of the Namahage legend and the dramatic cliff-and-reef coast of the Sea of Japan.
- DISTANCE
- 1400 km
- DURATION
- 22 h
- LEVEL
- Advanced
Starting from TASHILOG GARAGE in Hachioji, Tokyo, this is a serious long-distance expedition heading far north to Akita's Oga Peninsula. Because the total distance is long, Day 1 is mostly expressway transit, while Day 2 is spent savoring the peninsula's coastline at a relaxed pace.
Highlights
- Cape Nyudozaki — a grassy cape at the peninsula's northern tip on the 40th parallel, home to a black-and-white striped lighthouse you can actually climb.
- Godzilla Rock (Cape Shiosezaki) — a monster-shaped rock formation that glows against the sunset, one of Oga's signature scenic spots.
- Namahage Museum & Oga Shinzan Denshokan — experience the UNESCO-listed Namahage folk tradition of Oga.
- Oga Onsen hot-spring village — famed for its ishiyaki stone-cooked cuisine and mild saline carbonated waters.
Riding Notes
This is a demanding expedition with very long travel distances, mostly on expressways. Take frequent breaks and keep an easy pace. The rugged reef coastline looks its very best under the crisp, clear air of autumn.
