Kitaibaraki Izura Coast: Cliffs & Seafood One-Day Ride
Blast up the Joban Expressway to North Ibaraki to see the cliffs of Hiragata and Izura, visit Okakura Tenshin's Rokkakudo pavilion, and feast on fresh seafood at Otsu Fishing Port on this Pacific-coast day trip.
- DISTANCE
- 390 km
- DURATION
- 11 h
- LEVEL
- Intermediate
Starting from Tashilog Garage in Hachioji, this one-day route uses the Joban Expressway to reach North Ibaraki, the northernmost coast of the Kanto region. You cover distance quickly on the expressway in the morning, then slow down to enjoy dramatic Pacific cliffs and cultural landmarks.
Highlights
- Hiragata Port — a quiet, time-worn fishing town, famously the birthplace of anglerfish (anko) cuisine, set around a calm natural inlet.
- Izura Coast & Rokkakudo — a cliff-lined scenic area nicknamed "the Matsushima of Kanto." The crimson hexagonal pavilion Rokkakudo, designed by art thinker Okakura Tenshin, stands right on the rocks above the waves.
- Otsu Fishing Cooperative Market Diner — a beloved lunch spot serving local fish landed at Otsu and Hiragata ports at cooperative-direct prices.
Riding notes
Because much of the day is highway, plan fuel and rest stops. The Izura coast road (Ibaraki Pref. Route 354) narrows in places, so ride slowly near Rokkakudo. Winter is the season for anko hot pot, but watch for icy patches.
